Understanding Free Radicals, Oxidative Stress and Skin Health
You’ve probably heard that antioxidants are important. But what exactly do they do, and why do we need them?
Every day, our bodies carry out countless processes — from breathing and digestion to physical activity and normal metabolism. These essential processes naturally generate free radicals and other reactive molecules, including Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
Free radicals are not inherently harmful. In fact, they play important roles in normal biological processes, and our bodies have their own antioxidant defence systems to help keep them in balance.
The concern arises when the production of reactive molecules becomes greater than the body’s ability to neutralise them, potentially resulting in oxidative stress.
Research has linked oxidative stress to cellular damage and processes associated with ageing.
Modern Life and Oxidative Stress
Our bodies naturally produce reactive molecules, but everyday lifestyle and environmental factors can also influence oxidative stress.
These may include:
We cannot and do not need to eliminate free radicals completely.
Instead, the focus should be on supporting the body's natural antioxidant defence system and maintaining a healthy balance.
This is one reason why a varied, balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and other plant foods is an important part of everyday nutrition.
Antioxidants and Skin Health
Antioxidant support isn't just about what happens inside the body.
Our skin is constantly exposed to environmental stressors, particularly UV radiation and air pollution. These factors can contribute to oxidative stress within the skin and are associated with processes involved in skin ageing.
Research has shown that oxidative stress can affect important components of the skin, including lipids, proteins and DNA.
This has led to growing interest in the role of dietary antioxidants and plant compounds in supporting healthy skin.
Polyphenols, flavonoids and other plant-derived compounds have demonstrated antioxidant properties and are being studied for their potential role in maintaining skin health.
Of course, no single nutrient can stop the natural ageing process.
Healthy skin is influenced by many factors, including sun protection, diet, sleep, physical activity and overall nutritional status.
Antioxidant nutrition is simply one part of the bigger picture.
What Does the Research Say?
The potential connection between antioxidant nutrition and skin health has also been explored in human studies.
In one randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical study, 110 Asian and Caucasian adults consumed a standardized red orange extract for 56 days.
The study reported improvements in several skin-related measures, including:
↑ Skin antioxidant capacity
↑ Skin radiance
↑ Skin hydration and elasticity
The researchers also observed improvements in other parameters, including UV-induced skin response, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pigmentation intensity in dark spots and wrinkle depth.
These findings provide interesting evidence for the potential role of standardized red orange extract in supporting antioxidant status and selected aspects of skin health.
Importantly, these results relate specifically to the standardized red orange extract used in the study and should not be interpreted as clinical results for every product containing red orange extract.
Getting Antioxidants from Your Diet
Antioxidant nutrients and plant compounds can be found naturally in many foods.
Vitamin C, in particular, is a water-soluble antioxidant nutrient and also contributes to normal collagen formation. The key is variety. A balanced and diverse diet provides a broad range of nutrients and plant compounds that work together to support overall health.
Introducing CurVits Plus
An Upgraded Triple Antioxidant Formula
With growing interest in everyday antioxidant nutrition, we took our original Curcumin formula one step further.
CurVits Plus combines three key nutritional ingredients:
1.High-Purity Curcumin
Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound found in turmeric and has been extensively studied for its antioxidant properties.
2. Blood Orange Extract
Blood orange contains naturally occurring anthocyanins, polyphenols and other plant compounds, adding fruit-derived antioxidant nutrition to the formula.
3. Vitamin C
Vitamin C provides antioxidant support and contributes to normal collagen formation and healthy skin.
Curcumin × Blood Orange Extract × Vitamin C
Together, these three ingredients form the Triple Antioxidant Nutritional Combination of CurVits Plus.
CurVits Plus is designed to complement a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
For those looking for a convenient way to incorporate antioxidant nutrition into their daily routine, CurVits Plus brings together high-purity Curcumin, Blood Orange Extract and Vitamin C in one upgraded formula.
